

Mushrooms That Eat Pollution: The Surprising Science of Mycoremediation

Spill diesel on a patch of soil and it can sit there, toxic, for years. Unless you hand the job to a mushroom.
In one experiment, a pile of oil-soaked dirt got seeded with oyster mushrooms. Eight weeks later it was clean enough to use for landscaping along a highway.
That's not a fluke. It's a whole field called mycoremediation, and it's one of the quietly heroic things fungi do. They eat our messes. Oil, plastic, toxins, all of it.

What is mycoremediation?
Quick definition, because it's the key to everything below. Mycoremediation is using fungi to clean up pollution. Mushrooms grow a root-like web called mycelium, and that web pumps out powerful enzymes, the same ones fungi use to rot a fallen log.
It turns out those enzymes can also tear apart things like oil and plastic, molecules most bacteria can't touch. In other words, the world's great decomposer can decompose our garbage too. Here's where it gets fun.
Mushrooms that clean up oil spills
This is the headline act. Oyster mushrooms are champions at breaking down the nasty hydrocarbons in crude oil and diesel, the ones known as PAHs.
The famous proof came from mycologist Paul Stamets. His team took diesel-soaked soil and inoculated it with oyster mushroom mycelium. In about eight weeks, toxic hydrocarbons dropped from 10,000 parts per million to under 200, and the cleaned soil was approved for landscaping along highways.
Since then, mushrooms have been put to work on oil messes from a small spill at a California community center to the Amazon. There's even a Canadian chapter: a young inventor named Kelcie Miller-Anderson built the MycoMat, a roll-out mat of oyster mushroom mycelium designed to tackle the toxic tailings ponds left behind by oil sands mining.
Fungi that eat plastic
Now the one that sounds impossible. Some fungi can digest plastic.
In 2011, Yale researchers in the Ecuadorian Amazon found a fungus called Pestalotiopsis microspora that breaks down polyurethane even with no oxygen, which means it could work buried deep in a landfill. A few years later, scientists pulled a strain of Aspergillus tubingensis off a garbage dump in Pakistan that chews through polyurethane in weeks instead of decades.
And our friend the oyster mushroom? It's on this list too, able to degrade common plastics like polyethylene and PET. The same mushroom you'd sauté for dinner can, in the right setup, eat a plastic bag.
Mushrooms versus toxins and heavy metals
Oil and plastic are the showstoppers, but fungi quietly handle a much longer list. Through a process called biosorption, certain mushrooms soak up heavy metals like copper, zinc, and cadmium out of contaminated water and soil. Others break down pesticides, dyes, and even traces of pharmaceuticals.
The trick is always the same. Enzymes that evolved to break down tough natural material, pointed at the tough stuff we make instead.
Is mycoremediation actually a fix?
Here's where we stay honest, because the headlines tend to sprint ahead of the science.
Most of this is still early. A lot of the jaw-dropping results come from labs and small pilot sites, not city-scale cleanups. Fungi can be slow, they only handle certain pollutants, and the real world is far messier than a controlled experiment.
So mushrooms aren't a magic eraser for pollution, and they're certainly no excuse to keep making the mess. Think of them as a promising tool, not a silver bullet. But for a tool that grows itself out of wood chips and asks for almost nothing, that's still pretty extraordinary.

Here's the part that makes us grin. The hero of mycoremediation, the oyster mushroom, is the exact mushroom we build our food from.
Same species that cleans up oil spills, going into our plant-based ground. To be clear, the ones in our ground have only ever met wood and pea protein, never a diesel spill. But it's a good reminder of how capable this little organism really is.
